Our Mission
The mission of the library is twofold:
• Increasing literacy which will help eradicate poverty
• Help educate and inspire these future leaders to adopt peace, harmony and prosperity as the underlying philosophy of all future decisions with respects to economics, politics, and culture.
This mission will be achieved by organizing educational programs such as reading clubs, tutoring and helping with homework, holding essay contests, teaching creative writing and drama club, and holding educational video nights in the Free Community Library. In addition, the library will establish regular field trips for neighboring village students to experience for their first time the library to which you are so generously donating. For the non-students, the library hopes to organize community-wide reading programs, hold movie nights, provide meeting space and a place to read a book or a newspaper free.
Over the years, the people of Albuquerque have responded enthusiastically to the Ghana Free Community Libraries mission and generously donated over 300 boxes of books and other educational materials such as educational DVDs about space travels and marine life. More books and educational materials are needed. Also, funding to ship these donated books and other educational materials is desperately needed.
Former president of The University of New Mexico, Mr. Louis Caldera, was the first financial donor to this important venture. Generous donations from UNM Alumni Association to Dr. Shiame Okunor as "Teacher of the Year" (1984), Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Robinson of Virginia and Ms. Marsha Hardeman of Albuquerque, coupled with donations from other supporters of the library successfully launched the project. .
